After concluding his karting career in fine style Luke will graduate to the BARC Formula Renault Championship for the 2010 season. He finished third in the British Super 1 standings last year with Millennium Motorsport, after taking seven podiums. He has now signed a deal to join new outfit SWB Motorsport, for his upcoming switch to single seater racing cars, and says he is ready for the new challenge.
“Last year was remarkable and I’m proud of what we achieved."
“Last year was remarkable and I’m proud of what we achieved. I was the youngest driver in the field and a rookie at that level [KF1 is karting’s equivalent of Formula One]. Now I’m looking forward to competing in the BARC Renault series. It will be a good challenge for me.”
He adds: “I spent the winter testing a variety of different cars, from Formula BMW to Renault UK. Having evaluated the merits of each of them, I decided that BARC Renault offers the best overall opportunity for me to demonstrate what I can do, in what looks likely to be one of the closest-fought championships in the UK.”
“I joined SWB because of the pedigree of it’s key personnel. [Team Manager] Simon Baldry is widely renowned in the junior formulae ranks and when I heard he’d established his own team and had secured the services of Mark Godwin, I jumped at the chance to drive for him. Hopefully we will be able to enjoy a fruitful year together and be in a position to fight for victories from the outset.”
Baldry commented: “Luke contested the 2009 Formula Renault Winter Series and in those races it quickly became evident that he possesses considerable pace and talent. He also took part in a BARC Renault race at a sodden Thruxton and took a fantastic seventh place on his debut in the category.”
In addition to his BARC Formula Renault duties, Luke is considering competing in selected European Formula Renault races, held at legendary circuits such as Monza (Italy), Hockenheim (Germany) and Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium).
“This is essentially a learning year for me in preparation for a step up to Formula Three, possibly GP3 or a full-on assault on the Formula Renault UK title in 2011.”
In between his racing commitments, Luke will have to fit in studying for ‘A’ levels in Economics, Italian and Photography. It is perhaps unsurprising that the former Millfield pupil chose d’Overbroeck’s College in Oxford, not only for its academic excellence but also because it offers easy access to the country’s major race tracks and teams. "BARC Renault offers the best overall opportunity for me to demonstrate what I can do." The opening rounds of the 2010 Protyre Formula Renault BARC championship commence on 17/18 April at Brands Hatch in Kent.
