Luke looks to Renault after sealing 3rd in Super 1

 Ren

Luke claimed a fully-deserved third place overall in the British Super 1 championship, in a drama-filled final round of Britain’s premier championship at Fulbeck in Lincolnshire (17/18 October).

He delivered another strong performance and drove for solid points finishes. Afterwards he commented, “I kept my nose clean, did my best, plugged away and came away with third in the championship.”

"Wright was highly impressive"

The youngest driver in the field added, “I’m delighted that in just four years, I’ve quickly progressed from Mini Max to KF1 and in my debut season in the sport’s top-flight I was a consistent front-runner and a championship contender from first ‘til last - against far more experienced competition.”

It was mature performances like this earlier in the season that attracted the likes of leading British single-seater team, Fortec Motorsport to invite Luke to test with their Formula BMW team.

At a rain-soaked test at Snetterton, he impressed with his ability to quickly learn and adjust to new surroundings. A "Whilst more experienced drivers tip-toed around the track, Luke simply drove round them"
follow-up test was arranged at a different circuit – the demanding Oulton Park – and again Luke confirmed his potential with his pace, technical feedback and ability to drive on the limit in a car he was still getting to know, on a wholly unfamiliar track.

Indeed, this led the five-time Formula Renault UK championship winners to offer Luke a berth with them in the annual Winter Series, as a possible fore-runner to a full-on assault on the 2010 Formula Renault UK championship. Furthermore, in preparation for his Winter Series debut, Luke joined the fiercely competitive BARC Renault class at a rain-lashed Thruxton on 11th October. On Britain’s fastest track, in supremely challenging conditions he was described as the “outstanding category debutant” as he powered his way to a fantastic seventh position finish.

In the return encounter his courage and skill again excited one journalist to write, “Series rookie Wright was highly BrandsHatch7impressive once again” as he repeated his earlier drive to seventh place.

"Luke is fast, exciting and has genuine star potential. With the right backing and support, he could go all the way"

Welch Motorsport boss, Daniel Welch who ran Luke at the Hampshire circuit comments, “Luke demonstrated at Thruxton just what an exciting talent he is. In awful conditions, he rose to the challenge in a manner rarely seen before. His car control was just sublime and whilst more experienced drivers tip-toed around the track, Luke simply drove round them. I think we’ve unearthed a major and very exciting talent here and I’d say this to anyone considering backing him – Luke is fast, exciting and has genuine star potential. With the right backing and support, he could definitely go all the way. An opportunity exists right now to support a major new discovery and investing in his career at this stage would be far more cost effective than waiting and potentially missing out later on.”

The first two rounds of the (four-part) Winter Series will take place at Snetterton in Norfolk, on October 31 and November 1.
